If you plan on driving around Germany and Austria for your next trip, I wouldn’t quite recommend it.
What you’re about to see is what you (like us) probably expected most of the driving scenery to be like as we drove through the 3 different countries.
In reality, about 95% of our drive was like driving through the countryside of Oregon on a major highway.
Something to think about!
That being said, look at this gorgeous place we ran into while driving from Vienna to Halstatt! We come from the Pacific Northwest where we see green and water but this was different and quite incredible!
HALSTATT
I had big plans for the 5-6 hours allotted for this little town, but as it was thunder-storming and raining so we left a little early.
Sadly the chances of us returning are slim so if you get chance to go I hope you get to do the things we did not get a chance to do!
QUICK TIPS
1. Make this a True Half Day trip.
I had bigger plans for the 6 hours allotted, but even without the thunderstorm it would not have been enough time.
2. Do the Salt Mine Tour
This is the oldest salt mine dating back to the Bronze Age (B.C.) and is still in operation today! I’m not one for tours but this one was interesting and so entertaining! They had little stops throughout the mines with advanced and entertaining educational pit stops. Also, there are 2 slides which are a lot of fun. Plan for 2-3 hours.
3. We planned to rent a boat.
Obviously with the storm we couldn’t see this through but if you ever have the pleasure of visiting, I’m sure you wouldn’t regret this!
